University Counselor – Welcome

XLIS University Counseling aims to help students and parents as they prepare for the student’s next phase of education; university. The college application process is a journey, it begins with the student’s first step into secondary school. The earlier that families begin to prepare for this stage, the better and the more informed decisions they will make.

The application process requires close communication between students, parents, and university counselors (and that all parties should approach their roles with an open mind, a sense of adventure, and wisdom). However, the leading actor on the stage is always the student. He/she should be proactive in the process instead of relying on others. Moreover, please do not hesitate to contact the university counselor with questions or concerns. (Kate Yu, Kate.yu@xalis.com)

The college application process presents an opportunity for personal growth, self-reflection, and self-discovery. We will support students as they navigate through the journey of college admissions. While the outcomes are important, we believe that the key to college admission is discovering the most appropriate matches between students and colleges.

This is an opportunity of personal growth that cannot be deprived and during this process, the college counselor supports and guides students. Please keep the counselor informed about all your applications, recommenders, replies from the universities, and any external counselors being consulted.

-What is the difference between a reference (UK) and a letter of recommendation (US)?

A college essay (US) and a personal statement (UK)?

-What does the diploma I hold qualify me for? How many years will my degree take?

-Am I considered an international applicant?

-Do university admission requirements vary from year to year? How to find them?

-How do I prepare for my interview? And what`s the best approach to communicate with admission officers?

XLIS University Offers (Class of 2020)

The honor comes from hard work and success is hard. The 2020 offer is not only a reward for their hard work but also the recognition of their global citizenship. At this moment, the whole world is undergoing the test of the epidemic. We are glad to see that many countries cooperate and share successful experiences. In the future, the world will be more closely linked, which requires more compassionate and international people like these children. They recognize the spirit of humanity, share the responsibility of protecting the earth, and help create a better and more peaceful world. XLIS is fortunate to contribute to this

The PYP values play – throughout the programme a high importance is placed on play. Play is what children enjoy most and PYP teachers skillfully guide learning through play. Careful provocations are set up so students can interact with content and concepts through play.

Assessment in the PYP is based on Understanding by Design – meaning a backward planning approach to assessment is utilized. Each unit’s summative assessment is planned at the start of the unit. Lines of inquiry are formatively assessed throughout the unit and planning is adjusted regularly in accordance to students’ needs. XLIS also uses standardized testing to track our students’ progress. Three times a year our students are assessed in the areas of Mathematics, Reading and Writing.

XLIS Graduation

XLIS celebrates each year as we see our students graduate and move forward into their further education.

The university guidance ounselors at XLIS partner with students to help guide them in the university admissions process. It is important to both our school and the students that each student receives to right support and guidance when it comes to selecting a university that will best fit them, and reflect the same ideas and philosophies as the students themselves.

The university application process starts when students enter into the DP program, though students wishing to start looking into the university selection process can do so from MYP5. As students begin the DP programme there is sufficient information about a student’s academic journey, their interests, and what they would like to do in the future to begin the university selection process.
