Extracurricular Activities (ECAs)

Extracurricular Activities (ECAs) are after school programs that offer students to enhance or extend their learning outside of the traditional school curriculum. At XLIS we offer a wide range of ECAs that include the categories of language, sport, the arts, and technology. Depending on the type of activity, some are led by XLIS teachers and others by external providers who have been carefully vetted for their expertise. While students are encouraged to participate in an ECA that they find interested, enrollment in an ECA is not mandatory.

Bridge

Serve as a bridge between home and school, offering enrichment rather than simple instruction.

Growth

Promote the balanced growth of each child by providing developmentally appropriate activities.

Skills

Enhance play skills, increase social competence, and cooperative thought and action.

Friendship

Provide appropriate peer contact according to each student’s wants and needs.

XLIS Extra Curricular Activities

XLIS provides all students the opportunity to join our ECA programs with over 35 ECA subjects to choose from, there is something for everyone.

Each ECA that is offered at XLIS is structured to enrich the intellectual, social, physical, and emotional growth of all students. Our ECA program is designed to give all students opportunities to learn something more than traditional classroom learning and to give students something your child will enjoy with their friends or with students across other grades.

ECA Dates, Time, Bussing, and Non-Participation

The ECA program is divided into two semesters of 13-week blocks. Within these 13-weeks students will have 25 ECA lessons. The dates for the 2025-2026 school year are:

· Thursday, September 4^th – Semester 1 ECAs start

· Tuesday, December 9^th – Semester 1 ECAs end

· Thursday, March 12^th – Semester 2 ECAs start

· Tuesday, June 11^th – Semester 2 ECAs end

The majority of ECAs take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school from 15:30 to 16:30. On these days all school busses will depart at 16:40. A smaller number of ECAs, typically academically focused, take place on Monday and Fridays from 15:30 to 16:40. Bussing after these ECAs are arranged for an additional fee if needed for ECAs taking place on Monday and Friday.

Students who decide not to enroll in an ECA on Tuesdays and Thursday may leave the campus on Tuesdays and Thursday at 15:30 if picked up by a parent or guardian and the correct notice has been provided to the primary homeroom teacher or secondary principal. Non-participants are also able to remain at school until busses depart at 16:40 in a designated area under the supervision of XLIS teachers. During this time non-participating students are expected to quietly complete homework, study, or read.

ECA Registration, Payment, and Refunds

The XLIS community will be notified about the start of ECAs via email by the school’s Public Relations Department. Parents will need to register their children for ECAs using the XLIS ECA Mini Program on WeChat by reading the activity descriptions, selecting the desired class, and processing a payment. Parents will receive a confirmation receipt of payment, which guarantees the child’s enrollment in the activity.

Should a child need to withdraw from an ECA, refunds will be processed in the following manner:

A full refund is provided if a student withdraws in the first 7 days from the activity’s start.
A 50% refund is provided if a student withdraws in the first 14 days from the activity’s start.
A prorated refund is provided if a student withdraws from the school or provides a documented medical reason from a doctor.

Students may change ECA classes within the first 14 days from the activity’s start, provided there is space available in the desired class.

Extra Curricular Activitives

01. PYP Basketball

ECA for primary basketball team (not open to anymore students, team has been picked by trials). Develop basketball skills and compete against other schools.

02. Secondary Volleyball Club

A club to learn the skills of volleyball and develop a joy for playing the game. This club will lay the foundation for the development of a volleyball team in September 2021.

03. Soccer Team

Become a Blue Dragon and represent XLIS as a member of the school’s soccer team in matches against other international schools in Xi’an.

04. PYP Baseball

Opportunity for primary students to learn and play baseball in a relaxed environment.

05. Swimming

For those confident and not so confident in the pool, this activity is packed full of games and activities to play in the pool.

06. Fitness Club

CAS Students will lead group and with teachers, they will exercise together.

07. Table Tennis (Primary)

Learn table tennis from a former New Zealand national team member and play matches against other international schools in Xi’an.

08. Table Tennis (Secondary)

Play table tennis under the supervision of a former New Zealand national team member and play matches against other international schools in Xi’an.

09. Tennis

Develop students’ interest in tennis. Have a clear understanding of tennis. Cultivate excellent competitive sports spirit. Select and train the team members who can represent the school.

10. Early Year Movement & Dance

Children will get to explore making rhythms and beats with their bodies and hand instruments. They will learn basic dance movements that will help them to develop their gross motor skills, body coordination and rhythm while having lots of fun!

11. XLIS Primary Choir

Audition required ensemble group which represents XLIS for school events and other performance.

12. Arts & Craft

The Arts & Crafts Club filled with FUN projects, we will be exploring a variety of art mediums through exciting hands-on art making experiences- creative painting techniques, sculptures and mixed media collages.

13. Visual & Critical Studies

Students will have the opportunities to create personal work each class session, spend time on one or several pieces, or develop a body of work (a series).

14. Drama

Student will learn basic acting skills including singing and dancing. Students will have a chance to perform at Summer Musical Gala on May.

15. Ballet Dance

We will follow the Royal Academy of Dance course to give students the very basic dance practice and prepare the program for the events.

16. POP Dance

Pop dance is a chance for students to learn choreographed movements with popular music. They will develop body coordination, rhythm and team-work while having fun!

17. Drum

This class will help students learn and understand musical Notes, rhythm pattern and drum scores. Also, studying drum can help students balance their bodies.

18. Creative Cooking

Students will be able to tell what healthy and balanced food choices they can make everyday. In the meanwhile, students will be able to use a few kitchen tools and explain how the tools made our life easier.

19. Mandarin Debate

Students will learn basic strategies of debate, how to write debate script and how to organize debate structure.

20. eSports

eSports introduces students to the world of competitive, organized video gaming, and takes video gaming to another level, governed by its own strict set of rules and guidelines. Parent approval required.

21. Lego Robot

Students can improve practical ability and logical thinking ability through this ECA.

22. 3D Printing

The purpose of 3D printing intelligent programming community is to realize ideas into concrete objects through software and hardware and to materialize abstract concepts through innovative teaching models such as visualization.

23 Model Airplane

Studying in our club, the model aircraft you can make: Hand thrown airplanes Rubber band airplanes Electric free-flying airplanes Line controlled airplanes Radio-controlled airplanes and so on.

24. STEM Club

The ECA is a project-based learning program in STEM area.

25. MUN

Model United Nations is an event organized specifically for young people by official and civil organizations around the world.

26. Read to Success

Students will do activities where they will be able to identify and manipulate individual sounds to form words.

Mr. Alex Rambaud

Director of Whole School Cultural Activities

“Mr. Alex Rambaud, Director of Whole-school Cultural Activities and Dormitory, enthusiastically oversees the ECA program at XLIS along with Mr. Lee Li (Director of ECAs), and Mrs. Lena Chen (Vice Director of ECAs).

Together, they gather student data to design an exciting program, each semester. Mr. Alex hopes to provide students at XLIS with a myriad of choices and meaningful learning opportunities to extend their learning in a fun and engaging way.

The ECA program at XLIS promotes the continuous development of our students’ physical fitness, artistic understanding, and academic expertise. XLIS offers over 40 courses per semester and encourages students to chose their classes according to their interests and age group. The XLIS ECAs aim to prompt students into discovering their unique interests and enhance their abilities and creativity.
