What’s your fondest memory of XLIS?
My fondest memory of XLIS is the vibrant and dynamic interaction between students. One of my favourite experiences was collaborating with my peers in planning our DP Visual Arts Exhibition. Although the process was undoubtedly demanding, it never felt repetitive or tedious for a single moment. Reflecting, I feel truly privileged to witness—and at times offered feedback on—the creative processes behind my fellow classmates’ art pieces before their grand debut. Throughout the journey, we bonded as a team, a collective force that shaped our exhibition. The chemistry between us was something truly special.
Please share a story on how you are still making a difference today.
To me, making a difference means having a direct and tangible impact on the lives of others. When I learned that nearly 43% of UBC students experience food insecurity at least once a year, I felt a strong sense of urgency to take action for my peers. So, I decided to do something meaningful with my time between my classes. This year, I’ve been volunteering weekly at UBC Sprouts Café, a student-run community kitchen that offers low-cost and free vegan meals. Every Tuesday, in between my academic commitments, I rotate between three roles depending on the café’s needs: handling the till, cooking, and washing dishes. Over the term, I have contributed to the preparation and serving of over 300 meals. Even though my actions are small-scale and local, I have seen firsthand the effect of how consistent volunteering efforts can ease someone’s day. One moment that really struck me was when a customer told me, “This is the only proper meal I’ve had all week.” Volunteering during my free time has pushed me to grow, not only in time management and adaptability, but a deeper awareness of the challenges others face in my community.
