In our homeroom, we discuss all the challenges that students face in the 2nd year of DP. We have talked about global competencies and tips for revising. We are also looking at decision-making skills and the need to have a healthy mind and body for success in DP.

Business Management

Unit Title: Unit 5 – Operations Management

Concepts: Change, Culture, Ethics, Globalization, Innovation and Strategy

ATL skills: critical thinking, synthesis of theory and data, analytical thinking, research, writing

Help your child by:
Share your experiences with operations at the workplace and get your child to discuss the type of operational management strategy that your company is using
Encourage your child to watch videos on productions of different products (I.e. How It’s Made), consider watching them together and discuss where bottlenecks may happen and how such problems may be addressed

Group 4: Biology:

Unit Title: Human Physiology SL/HL and Option D-Human Physiology
Concepts: Change, processes, systems

ATL skills: Self-management and research-The IA has to be completed by December 21.

Help your child by: Discussing what has been completed in class with relevance to the human systems. Possibly bring in some cultural aspects of diet and exercise. Encourage your child to complete reading and revising completed portions and engage in research for the IA.

Unit Title: Redox process

Essential understanding:
Redox (reduction–oxidation) reactions play a key role in many chemical and biochemical processes.
Voltaic cells convert chemical energy to electrical energy and electrolytic cells convert electrical energy to chemical energy.

ATL skills:

Thinking:
ask students to formulate a reasoned argument to support their opinion or conclusion
give students time to think through their answers before asking them for a response
help students to make their thinking more visible (for example, by using a strategy such as a thinking routine)
include a reflection activity
make a link to TOK

Research
require students to formulate/construct a focused research question (either in class or in a homework assignment)

Help your child by: Encourage the students to take more responsibility for their own learning and research, practice their self-management skills and research skills and meet the deadlines for Chemistry IA and tasks.

Group 5:

Mathematical Applications and Interpretation SL

Teacher: Chris Rothwell

Unit Title: Statistics

Concepts: Organizing, representing, analyzing and interpreting data, and utilizing different statistical tools facilitates prediction and drawing of conclusions. Different statistical techniques require justification and the identification of their limitations and validity. Approximation in data can approach the truth but may not always achieve it.

ATL skills: This unit forms a good foundation for students to undertake the Internal Assessment hence great priority is given to research methods.

Help your child by: Encouraging them to complete homework on time.

Group 5:

Mathematical Analysis and Approaches SL

Teacher: Sky Du

Unit Title: Calculus in trigonometry

Trigonometry allows us to quantify the physical world, enhancing our spatial awareness in two and three dimensions. This topic provides us with the tools for analysis, measurement and transformation of quantities, movements and relationships.

Students are led step-by-step through investigations to arrive at one or more of these conceptual understandings:
Equivalent measurement systems, such as degrees and radians, can be used for angles to facilitate ease of calculation.
Different representations of the values of trigonometric relationships, such as exact or approximate, may not be equivalent to one another.
The trigonometric functions of angles may be defined on the unit circle, which can visually and algebraically represent the periodic or symmetric nature of their values.

ATL skills: Thinking
In this unit, we will
ask students to formulate a reasoned argument to support their opinion or conclusion
require students to take an unfamiliar viewpoint into account when formulating arguments
ask questions that required the use of knowledge from a different subject from the one you are teaching

Communication
In this unit, we will
assess or give feedback on speaking or writing concisely
provide opportunities for students to read and understand different types of texts
encourage or require students to plan a response before they begin

Research
In this unit, we will
require students to record their search for sources in steps (types of search engines, search terms, and so on)
give students advice on (or provide an opportunity for students to practise) narrowing the scope of a task to make it more manageable
discuss or model the importance of academic honesty and clear acknowledgment of sources

Help your child by: constantly check their homework completion status by examining their homework book and how are they doing in reviewing some terms in Calculus.
