The Jr. Chang’an Cup
The 2nd Annual Xi’an International Elementary Basketball Invitational
Saturday, May 14th was one of the most unforgettable days in my life. Excitement, joy, and happiness surrounded me after winning the Jr. Chang’an Cup championship by only one point. The thing is we won against Kangchiao, a school with big and strong players. It wasn’t really in my expectation to win. My parents were also very proud of me winning and for being selected as part of the all-tournament team.
We arrived at our school, XLIS, while the game between Xi’an Hanova International School and XIS Gold just started. I was surprised when watching the second game that XIS Gray beat Xi’an Gaoxin No.6 Primary School. As a result, we met XIS Gray in the semi-finals. I was ready! Everything was totally perfect before the game for me. We beat XIS by a big margin and knew that the team coming up next was Kangchiao.
The players from Kangchiao were big, strong, and fast. By their size, it seemed that we already lost before the game. But Mr. Boudreau told us “We believe!” before the game, and it made me forget what I was thinking about my opponents before. When the game started there was lots of fouls and contact. Although we are leading in the first half, I was very tired.
Kangchiao had to catch up in the second half and we led the game by two points in the last minutes. In the last seconds, the score was 25-27, and Kangchiao was playing offense with a chance to tie the game. One of their players went for a lay-up and me and Daniel fouled him. I barely can accept what I just did, because if he made both shots the game would be in overtime.
As the first shot made a swish sound in the net, our team is in a very bad situation. My heart jumped quickly, and it almost jumped out of my throat. I shivered, too. When the second shot bounced on the back of the rim, I refused to look. The whole stadium was in a silence. As I blinked my eye back again the ball bounced back surprisingly, right towards the position that I could get it easily. I jumped high, reached for it, and I got it and held it tight. As the buzzer sounded the only thought in my mind was, “We believe, we win!”
