Dear XLIS Families and Friends,
First, I want to extend my warm welcome to all our returning and new families and staff joining our XLIS Community!
Please allow me to introduce myself briefly for all the families joining us this year. My name is Maria Zialcita and I am from the Philippines. I have 22 years of teaching experience at international schools. Prior to coming to China, I worked in South Korea for 14 years. It will be my 9th year at XLIS. This year, I will also take the role of Head of All Staff Well-being while continuing as the PYP Coordinator.
Orientation Week
We had a productive orientation week! This year, the leadership team worked together to guide our new staff in getting familiar with the school’s structure, policies, culture, and curriculum. Some of the highlights of the orientation were exploring the child protection, communication, and restorative practices policies, Daily 5, Seesaw, Unit planning and Portfolios. It was wonderful to see all the team leaders sharing their best practices, and strategies with the team.
Communication
The first week is all about building a positive relationship and getting to know your child. All students will get familiar with the school and classroom routines and co-create their class essential agreements with the teacher.
Transitioning into a new environment takes time and for some children can cause anxiety and stress. Our principal, Mrs. Song, myself and our head of TA, Ms. Fiona will welcome all our new students on the first day to help them feel comfortable and get to know people within the school they can ask help anytime. It is vital that you continue to provide support at home and communicate openly to the teachers during this period of adjustment. Our principal, Mrs. Song will send regular notices to our community to keep you updated of what is happening at school.
As a parent, your active involvement at school and collaborating with the teachers will greatly benefit your child and foster a positive attitude towards learning. To attain our goal of building a positive and trusting relationship, we need to establish clear communication within the school. Please find the list below of how to contact us. Please be reminded also to check our school website regularly for updates and information about the PYP.
