I truly felt the power of music through the First Silk Road Music Competition at XLIS last Saturday supported by Overseas Chinese Scholars and Overseas Chinese of Shaanxi Youth Federation. As Dr. Liu mentioned at her closing remarks, music has the power to unite us. Philosopher Nietzsche said that “music starts where language ends.” We all have different backgrounds, different languages, and different perspectives, but we all come together in music. The power of music is to eliminate differences and break them down. I hope that these lessons will be deeply ingrained in the hearts of our young musicians and music lovers. The Silk Road Music Competition will be held every year at XLIS so I hope many talented and passionate young musicians will join this competition not only from Xi’an but from all around the world. Through this competition, I sincerely hope that they will discover themselves, challenge themselves, and grow into healthy young learners.
What’s more, with great honor, we invited four accomplished returnee musicians to come to the scene, presenting a high-standard professional performances for the audience, each of whom was totally immersed in the wonderful musical atmosphere that created by piano, violin and classical singing.
The results of the competition are as follows:
Platinum Award

(Xi’an Gaoxin Experimental Primary School)
Youth
Zhao, Chloe
Lee, Yujin
It is a great honor to participate in this exchange performance activity. Thanks to XLIS and Gaoxin Experimental Primary School for giving me the opportunity to communicate with students from various countries who love music. This has enabled me to have a richer and deeper understanding of music, as well as to recognize more elite students in music hobbies, which has given me endless motivation and inspired me to continue learning this elegant art.

I enjoy music, I love piano. This is my first time to play a song formally at my school XLIS, and I attached great importance to it. For me, it’s not only a competition, but also a rare chance to exchange, a grand celebration for all of us music lovers. I am quite satisfied with my performance this time, and the unexpected award motivated me so much. I appreciate this opportunity to perform and participate. Compete is one aspect, but more importantly, I can learn from all the musicians. I bet that music will accompany me throughout my whole life!

First of all, I would like to thank you for your encouragement and support towards me.
I have been very passionate about music since I was in preschool. So, naturally, music became an important part of my life, and sometimes it was a hope and comfort to me. Meanwhile, I heard that XLIS was opening a music competition, so I thought it would be an exciting experience and decided to participate. In the first performance, I was a little nervous about the huge scale and made some mistakes, but as it was a precious chance for me, I did my best on the stage and performed feeling happy. Another thing that I enjoyed about the Silk Road was that I could listen to other students’ music on the big stage. While listening to their music, I felt comfortable and could heal myself. Thanks to Silk Road, I became much closer to music as I communicated with music, and I will try my best to perform music that makes people and I feel peaceful.
