The Chang’an Cup is an annual basketball tournament for international senior high school students hosted by Xi’an Liangjiatan International School (XLIS). Located in the Chang’an District of Xi’an and inspired by the grandeur of China’s ancient capital, XLIS created the Chang’an Cup to promote exchange within the community of international schools in Xi’an. For the children of foreign nationals, the tournament is an opportunity to participate in an organized, competitive basketball tournament reminiscent of youth level sports in the west. For local students preparing to go abroad, it is a chance to build relationships with their foreign peers studying in Xi’an and experience what sports might be like at a western university.
The inaugural tournament was held earlier this year in January. Eleven teams from eight schools competing for the championship in boys’ and girls’ divisions. The tournament attracted Xi’an’s three foreign national schools, international departments from the city’s most prestigious local high schools, and the Xi’an’s only foreign language school. A sporting event of this magnitude had never been held in Xi’an for international schools. For a detailed recap of the inaugural edition of the tournament, please click here: Inaugural Chang’an Cup
Tournament Information and Application Process
The second edition of the Chang’an Cup will take place on January 14 and 15, 2022. With the success of the first edition, the number of schools interested in participating has grown. As a result, XLIS must undertake a vetting process before releasing the final list of participants. When the application process and vetting has been completed, a final schedule and list of teams will be published. The goal is to increase the number of boys’ teams to at least nine, and the number of girls’ teams to six.
For schools that are interested, please click the poster below and scan the QR code. Fill in the application form that appears after scanning the QR code. Remember that this is a tournament for international high school students, so the applying school must either offer an internationally recognized curriculum or enroll foreign national students.
Tournament Memorabilia and Awards
Like the previous year, each participating student will be presented with a gift package with exclusive Chang’an Cup memorabilia. In addition, schools will receive a commemorative banner that can be displayed for future students to be inspired to participate. Of course, there will also be awards for team and individual excellence.
The championship winners will be awarded the Chang’an Cup trophy and a championship pennant. Medals will also be presented to all players on the teams that finish first, second and third place, and a special “Sportsmanship” award will be voted by coaches and given to the team that most exemplifies fair play. Finally, the tournament organizers will honour individual excellence by selecting an “All-Tournament Team” of the best players from the respective boys’ and girls’ divisions.
Health and Safety
According to the current epidemic situation in China and requirements from the Education Bureau of Xi’an Hi-tech Zone on epidemic prevention and control, all the visitors from outside XLIS will be required to submit their personal health information in advance. The information will be checked by the XLIS health centre and individuals who pass the screening may enter the campus. More details regarding the health protocols will be released closer to the date of the tournament.
