The results of the 2021 YouLan Award for Outstanding Women in China’s International Schools, have recently been officially announced. The Head of Xi’an Liangjiatan International School, Dr. Liu, was granted the award of “Top 10 Most Innovative Women School Principals”.
To commend female principals who have made outstanding contributions in the field of international education, spread their educational experiences and ideas, share their educational thinking and results, and promote their professionalism and character, the International Schools Online, China’s top international education experts and principals, as well as media experts in education, jointly held the 2021 YouLan Award for Outstanding Women in China’s International Schools.
The award was determined by a panel comprised of 16 judges including Wang Benzhong, Member of the National Education Advisory Committee; Zhou Mansheng, former Deputy Director and Researcher of the Education Development Research Center of the Ministry of Education and Executive Vice Director and former Vice President of the Academic Committee of the China Education Development Strategy Society; Wu Yingmin, Vice President of the China Education Association and first President of the Guangdong Primary and Secondary School Principals’ Association; Teng Jun, Vice President and Professor of the Institute of International and Comparative Education of Beijing Normal University; Zhou Nianli, Professor of Department of Preschool Education, Faculty of Education, East China Normal University; Chen Yue, former Education Counsellor, Chinese Embassy in New Zealand; Dong Shengzu, Director of Institute of Private Education, Shanghai Academy of Education Sciences; Tian Guangcheng, Director of Institute for the Development of Private Education, Zhejiang Province; Zhao Jing, East Asia Director of International Assessment Department, University of Cambridge; Chen Yonghan, Director of ACT Asia; Fu Xiaoxiao, Director of China Centre of University of Manchester, UK; Cao Wen, Professor of Beijing Foreign Studies University, and Wu Zijian, former Chief Principal of Shanghai YK Pao School.
On October 26th, the 5th CERB Forum & Global Educational Resource Expo and the 2nd Summit of Women Leadership in International Schools, was held in Shanghai. Dr. Liu, the Head of Xi’an Liangjiatan International School, USC Global Ed.D, Member of the National Youth Committee, and member of the Shaanxi Provincial Political Consultative Conference, was one of the nominees. As the founding principal of XLIS, Dr. Liu has led the school from its initial enrollment of 40 students to currently boasting over 700 students and teachers from over 41 nations. During her nine years of service at XLIS, she has driven the school to acquire numerous honors such as becoming the first IB Continuum International school with a fifteen-year consistent curriculum accreditation authorization, in northwest region of China. XLIS is also the first SAT and AP test site authorized school in Shaanxi, as well as a member of ACAMIS. Xi’an Liangjiatan International School is funded by the Xi’an Municipal Government and the Xi’an High-Tech Zone Management Committee and aims to serve the Free Trade Zone in Shaanxi Province and the world. Dr. Liu has diligently advocated for Chinese teachers to continuously disseminate Chinese culture and further develop their competencies with an international perspective. In 2020, she was granted the “Light of Civilization Award as Chinese Cultural Exchange Person for the year”. Today, she is heralded as “Top 10 Most Innovative Women School Principals” for her innovative spirit, impeccable school management systems, and outstanding contributions to the forefront of international education.
Dr. Liu has often quotes the eminent words of the distinguished American educator John Dewey,“Education is not preparation for life, education is life itself.” Finally, Dr. Liu keeps her educational philosophy at the forefront: “Changing lives through education”. To this day, Dr. Liu firmly believes that the development of international education in China within a modern context, requires perseverance and innovation from Chinese educators so that they may adapt to the new missions and needs of an ever-changing world. These high standards and expectations, coupled with providing high-quality international education for students from different cultural backgrounds, paint an accurate portrait of the type of genuine and passionate educational leader that Dr, Liu epitomizes.
