Embark on a Journey of Discovery
At XLIS, we firmly believe that Science education should transcend traditional limits. We strive to equip our students with the tools they need to take ownership of their learning and inspire them to delve into the realm of scientific investigation. Our ultimate goal is to cultivate well-rounded, open-minded individuals with a strong command of scientific principles and techniques. Furthermore, we endeavor to nurture a sense of community, effective communication, and technological proficiency within our student body.
Our MYP students have achieved remarkable feats this year, particularly in their engagement with science projects. These have included the creation of intricate models of cells and DNA, exploration of cutting-edge materials like bioplastics and carbon nanotubes, and deep dives into the beauty and practical applications of science. One example of their scientific prowess can be seen in the experiment on osmosis conducted by MYP3 students, which involved investigating water molecule movement across a semi-permeable membrane. By exposing potato strips to different concentrations of salt solutions, the students were able to explore the phenomenon of osmosis, using potatoes as a model for cells with selectively permeable membranes. Through this hands-on activity, students developed their experimental design, data collection, and analysis skills, while gaining a deeper understanding of cellular processes, diffusion, and osmosis, and honing their scientific inquiry skills.
At XLIS, our Diploma Programme (DP) is designed to ignite a lifelong passion for science. We offer a wide range of courses in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Systems & Societies (ESS), all of which provide students with the opportunity to explore various aspects of living organisms, materials science, behavioral patterns, and global issues such as climate change. Our DP Science curriculum prioritizes practical work, including laboratory work, experiments, and hands-on activities, to enhance students’ practical skills and understanding of scientific principles. Our courses aim to develop students’ investigative and analytical skills, enabling them to apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios. Our approach to science education is comprehensive and well-balanced, fostering critical thinking, research skills, and an in-depth understanding of the scientific method.
The XLIS Science Fair stands out as a major event within our esteemed Science Department this year. It offers our students a distinctive chance to immerse themselves in the world of science in an innovative way. Our learners are motivated to delve into their curiosity for scientific exploration, follow their own ideas to tackle problems that pique their interest, and apply the scientific approach to conduct independent research. The XLIS Science Fair meticulously picks around 80 projects from 21 categories for presentation. The champions of this prestigious event may also earn the opportunity to participate in the ISEF (International Science and Engineering Fair) Regional Science Fair.
At XLIS, we are dedicated to fostering a passion for STEM among our students by encouraging them to participate in various challenges. In 2023, our students have excelled in multiple competitions, including the CREST award, BIG Science Competition (BSC), Intermediate & Senior Physics Challenge (IPC&SPC), Junior Science Olympiad Exam (JSOE), and Junior Canadian Chemistry Olympiad (JCCO). We are thrilled to have achieved a total of 6 first and gold prizes, 6 second and silver prizes, and 8 third and bronze prizes, as well as having our teachers recognized twice as Outstanding Coaches. Our ultimate goal is to empower our students to apply their scientific knowledge and skills to real-world problems by providing them with opportunities to explore science beyond the classroom.
At XLIS, science education transcends the confines of textbooks and becomes an enlightening voyage of discovery, creativity, and global consciousness. We invite you to join us in fostering the future generation of visionaries, scientists, and pioneers. With the XLIS Science Fair and our unparalleled science education, we are molding future leaders who will leave an indelible mark on our planet.
