2. Professional Development Days
Primary School teachers were engaged in an IB Workshop on Language Acquisition. Secondary Teachers followed 2 workshops depending of the programme they teach and their preference. Middle Years Programme attended the MYP: Creating authentic units in the MYP. Diploma Teachers attended the Theory of Knowledge across subjects. Those two days were very valuable in the professional development of the staff.
3. Parents Open Day
Students’ parents from PYP5 to DP2 were invited to drop in the classrooms to see how the teaching and learning went on at XLIS. Parents Open Day is a creative shool event in this semester to promote family-school interaction and strengthen the community connection, through which parents could have an opportunity to participate daily teaching in the classroom and get a further understanding of the curriculum plan implementation. The Open Day event has been highly praised by those parents who were involved.
Primary School Events
1. Literacy and Culture Week
We have celebrated literacy week in the primary school for the past eight years. It is one of the significant events in primary to promote a love of reading, highlight various fun and engaging ways to enhance language teaching and learning and educate parents about the value of reading at home. Our tradition was to start the week with Pajama Day and then throughout the week, classes did various activities appropriate to their grade level. One of the highlights in the past has been buddy reading with MYP or other primary classes. To end the week, the Friday was “Book Character Day” where the students were encouraged to dress up as a character from a story. It was a lot of fun to see the creative ways the students represented the characters from books!
Secondary School Events
1. Literacy and Culture Week
(Activities in subject areas in Secondary)
Students were engaging in activities aiming to reinforce their understanding of literacy across the curriculum. During this week, the students completed a writing assessment in Sciences.
2. MUN Event
This event was the first of its kind in the school. It had been rescheduled for the 14th as we were in school and the students were able to organise this event more successfully. The event was run like an MUN event and was led by the students. Teachers were facilitators and allowed the students to take responsibility for this event.
3. American Mathematics Competition (AMC10 / AMC12)
On Nov.11th and 17th, 7 students from our high school participated in AMC 10/12 and the results have just been released. Yoyo (Gao Yuchen) from MYP4 obtained a whopping mark of 97.5 and is in the top 5% among more than 300,000 candidates across the globe. He has now qualified for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME). The AMC 10/12 provides an opportunity for high school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in college application and future careers.
