3. Parent Teacher Conference
After having received the progress report this was an opportunity for parents to schedule a time with their child’s teachers to discuss progress in the first unit. Parents prepared some questions to ask teachers on how they could partner to help the child achieve the very best. We are so fortunate at XLIS to have such engaged parents, who we love to partner with.
Primary School Events
1. Primary Parent Workshop
EAL Support at XLIS and How You Can Help Your Language Learner at Home.
This workshop was led by Mr. Terren Maves and Ms. Whitney Hartford, two of our EAL teachers in the PYP at XLIS.
This workshop have equipped parents with the knowledge and tools to support their children’s English language learning journey. We explored how EAL was used and implemented in the classroom, understood the WIDA testing system, and discovered practical strategies to foster English language development at home. Parents gained valuable insights on how to create a supportive learning environment and learned about helpful materials that could enhance their child’s progress.
2. Primary Literacy and Culture Week
Literacy and Culture Week is one of the main events at XLIS. In the primary division, our goal is to promote and develop a love of reading that will benefit our students for a lifetime. Some of the highlights include: a school-wide book fair located in front of the library, a storyteller from the USA buddy reading across grade levels, the book character parade, and various activities in different classes. The Literacy and Culture Week is also a time to explore and celebrate the stories that come from around the world and within our XLIS community, giving our students the opportunity to learn more about where their peers and teachers come from.
Secondary School Events
1. Secondary Parent Workshop
On the 9th of October, there was a secondary parent workshop on Inquiry based learning in Math, Science and Individuals and Societies. Co-led by Mr. Sky Du, Mr. Kelvin Tian and Mr. Kyle Jooste, the workshop aimed to engage parents in understanding how inquiry is at the heart of teaching in the IB. There was an emphasis on knowing how creative and critical thinking could help form arguments, solve problems and connect with the bigger global contexts in which these problems were formed and solved.
2. Parent Open Day
In October, we’ve invited MYP 1-4 parents stepping into classrooms to observe half day classes with students, and to experience the normal Secondary school life at XLIS.
3. CAS Exhibition
On the 11th of October, XLIS held the first ever CAS exhibition. Students of DP2 under the guidance of the CAS coordinator, Ms. Jasmin Sun demonstrated their CAS project and talked to the grades M4-DP1 about their experience. CAS is an integral part of the IB core and a requirement for getting the IB Diploma. However, CAS also allows students to learn to look at experiences and serving beyond just graduation requirements.
5. Secondary 3-way Conference
The three way conferences are opportunities for a student to demonstrate progress and achievement in a common forum with parents and teachers. This discussion followed up from the progress reports that had been released on October 18.
