2023 Xi’an Psychological Education International Exchange Conference at XLIS
On the morning of Friday, October 27th, 2023, XLIS set the stage for a unique international exchange for educational experts. The 2023 Xi’an Psychological Education International Exchange Conference for Primary and Secondary Schools was co-initiated by the Xi’an Association for Science and Technology (XAST), the Xi’an Educational Psychology Association (XEPA), and was hosted by Xi’an Liangjiatan International School.
More than 200 psychological education experts and teachers from China, the United Kingdom, the United States and other countries, participated in the discussion. Together, they presented the audience with a wide variety of mental health approaches, study cases of domestic and foreign students, as well as providing solutions for “comprehensively strengthening and improving the students’ mental health in the currency era and increasing students’ mental health literacy”.
As the opening ceremony host, Dr. Liu, Head of XLIS, welcomed all participating guests and extended her heartfelt gratitude. Ms. Yang Yuqin, member of the Party Committee and Vice chairman of the Shaanxi Association for Science and Technology; and Mr. Shang Hua, the Chairman of the Xi’an Educational Psychology Association, gave opening speeches and extended their congratulations on the successful hosting of this meaningful event.
Ms. Yang stressed that mental health is the foundation of individual happiness and the source of social harmony. It is our common responsibility to improve the mental health of children and adolescents. Mr. Shang mentioned the historical mission of the Xi’an Educational Psychology Association which is “to lead the research of educational psychology, apply psychology to serve the society, and escort the healthy growth of the younger generation, both mentally and physically”.
Six Chinese and foreign education experts from primary education, higher education, and international education shared their experiences and reflections on different research areas and work practices.
Ding Xiaojun, Associate Professor, School of Humanities and Social Science Department of Philosophy, Xi’an Jiaotong University,and Wei Ping, Professor, Xidian University, grafted philosophical knowledge into the exploration of adolescent mental health problems respectively with the themes of “Returning the Joy of Thinking to Children: How Children’s Philosophy Facilitates Youth Development.” and “Treat yourself well before you love others.”
In addition, Michelle Taylor (USA), XLIS’ Whole School Social and Emotional Counselor, and Benjamin Wright (UK), XLIS’ Early Years Lead Teacher, focused on the topics of “Understanding Suicide; Intervention & Prevention” and “Caring for Students in the Early Years” through the perspective of international educators.
Dai Luxuan, Psychology Teaching and Research Lead Teacher, Xi’an’s Gaoxin Experimental Primary School, and Yang Mingchun, Xi’an Gaoxin No.1 High School Psychology Teacher, explored the implementation of mental health education curriculum and practice in Primary and Middle Schools, gave speeches on “Appreciating Beauty, Nurturing with Care, Empowering Growth.” and “Identification and Intervention of Mental Health Problems among Secondary School Students”. These presentations provided excellent models with practical significance for promoting the healthy growth of the teenagers.
With the innovation of artificial intelligence in the current age of information, mental health has long become a major topic that cannot be ignored across the global sphere. How to better support students’ social and emotional development and promote students’ physical and mental healthy growth in the process of education and teaching is an urgent issue for every educator in the modern era. Only by identifying the problem as well as applying professional guidance can we provide students with practical and effective help, guide them to establish positive values and self-identity, learn to explore the meaning of life through different experiences, and pursue the true meaning of happiness.
