“Those who dare to teach must never cease to learn” ——John Cotton Dana
This quote reflects the goal of XLIS this year. We are committed to providing time and resources for teachers to engage in collaborative work, which gives them time to reflect on their practice and set personal improvement goals. On Friday, 17th February, our Secondary teachers spent a whole day working together mapping the ATL skills. ATL skills are the umbrella that covers all three programmes, and they enable students to hone skills that will make them more confident and ready to face the world. Teachers develop those skills as we work together; collaboration is vital to improvement.

Our facilitators, Mr. Ghosh, Mr. Welch and Ms. Yang, guided the activities for the day. Ms. Yang shared the work she has been doing with the MYP1 & 2 on ATL skills and stated that the skills had been understood well. Mr. Ghosh, our DP Coordinator, explained the alignment of what we will do with what we have already covered in our previous PD -moving from BICS to CALP, thus creating continuity in our professional development.
The first part of the morning was spent in subject groups where teachers worked collaboratively to map the different ATL skills across the years. We then had a session where a department representative shared their chart and explained their findings after doing this activity. This session enabled us, teachers, to see the trend and identify the gaps in teaching the skills.
The day was very productive; teachers left the room with a clearer understanding of the ATL subskills and their relationship to our teaching and learning.
