The first phase of the XLIS 2021 SDGs Summer Camp for ECE-P3 was successfully completed.
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The term SDGs stands for “Sustainable Development Goals”. These 17 goals were brought forward by the United Nations and represent a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. The goals address the global challenges we face today, including poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice.(un.org)
SDG 14 “life on land” and SDG 15 “life under water” , represented the learning context of the first phase of XLIS’ summer camp. Students explored the characteristics and habits of different animals and their habitats. This was achieved with the guidance of the transdisciplinary curriculum designed by the homeroom teachers and the support of the Mandarin, Performing Arts, Physical Education, Visual Arts, and Dance specialists. In the classroom, students created rich and colorful 3D representations of living creatures, designed environmentally friendly bags, and created informative visual displays. The students also analyzed the environmental problems faced by endangered animals and reflected on potential solutions for these. Students also inquired into various related concepts and topics from a variety of perspectives, thus showcasing a deeper understanding about the importance of sharing the Earth and its resources in a sustainable way. In addition, students were guided to learn about the IB learner profiles and the relevance of being caring and reflective learners.
Using the United Nations’ sustainable development goals as a learning context provides us with an opportunity to address relevant world problems whist building a global community with a shared vision. In order to realize this mission and continue to cultivate future talents for Xi’an, Shaanxi, China, and the world, our school encourages its students to establish meaningful connections between what they have learned in the classroom and the world we live in. This learning process begins in our early year’s classrooms through inquiry and research into the world around us.
Over the years, our school has delivered a considerable number of talented young learners with an international vision. We hope that the XLIS 2021 Summer Camp will further cement our school as the only International Youth Exchange Camp in Shaanxi Province, and continue to develop international talents with a sense of community and the desire to build a better world.
