Week Without Walls
The Week Without Walls (WWW) program at Xi’an LiangJiatan International School (XLIS) is an experiential learning initiative that takes students beyond the classroom to explore real-world challenges through hands-on activities, cultural immersion, and service learning. Aligned with the school’s mission to nurture global citizens, the 2024/2025 theme, “Magnificent China,” sends each grade to a unique location, such as Chengdu for wildlife conservation (SDG 15), Chongqing for urban sustainability (SDG 9), Foshan (SDG 11), Yangshuo (SDG 13), Zhangzhou (SDG 2) and Lijiang for indigenous ecosystems (SDG 12). Where they engage in interdisciplinary projects tied to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Activities range from farming workshops and conservation efforts to social enterprise simulations, all designed to develop leadership, problem-solving, and ethical awareness. The program integrates Service as Action (SA) and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) requirements, with tailored durations for each grade (e.g., half-day projects for MYP1–2, full-day for MYP3–5, and extended tasks for DP1). Rigorous risk assessments, trained chaperones (1:7 ratio), and first-aid protocols ensure safety. Running from June 2–6, 2025, WWW not only fosters 21st-century skills like teamwork and resilience but also deepens students’ appreciation for China’s cultural and environmental diversity. By stepping outside their comfort zones, XLIS learners embody the IB mission—becoming proactive, compassionate contributors to a more sustainable and peaceful world.
