Dear Parents,
Since my last email in October, we have entered November, and the days are starting to get shorter and colder. I hope that today’s email finds you and your family in good health and that you are keeping warm on these chilly days.
In today’s message, I would like to remind you of some upcoming events and activities you can participate in with your child at home.
Winter Months in Xi’an
The heating will soon come on, which can impact the air quality in Xi’an. As such, we try to have the students play outdoors as much as possible when the air quality is good. So, when there is light rain, or colder days, please make sure your child comes prepared for the weather, so they can enjoy outside play. Should the AQI in our district go above 170, we will have the students stay indoors.
Upcoming Events in November
This week is a rare time when there are no events planned in our calendar. Our mini-volley teams will have their practices after school on Monday and Friday, preparing for their first game in November. We would really love to have lots of support during our sports events, especially when they are played here at XLIS. Please do mark this day in your calendar and come to XLIS to support our Blue Dragons if you can:
Saturday, November 22
U11 Mini Volley @ XLIS, 9:00-12:00
World Kindness Day – Friday, November 14th
This Friday is World Kindness Day. In our primary division, we are trying to promote acts of kindness that children can do to make their class, their relationships, and the school a better place. Some examples of “acts of kindness” are:
1. Write a kindness note for someone
2. Talk to someone you don’t usually talk to and try to get to know them
3. Sit with someone new at lunch
4. Pick up 5 pieces of trash
5. Thank an Ayi
6. Cut out 10 paper hearts & leave them for friends to find
7. Invite a new friend to play/hang out with you
8. Draw a picture & give it to someone
Of course, there is so much more that can be done. I encourage you to talk with your child at home about how acts of kindness can improve the world around them. Can you also try some of these at home?
On Friday, November 14th, your child can wear pink to school to show how they support being kind to others.
November 17, 18 – EKC Professional Development
Please be sure to mark these dates in your calendar as there is no school for students on these two days. Our primary staff will be working for the second consecutive year with Erin Kent Consulting (EKC) to learn about current best practices in literacy learning for multilingual learners. This PD is directly connected to our first schoolwide goal of supporting our students in their development of XLIS’s language of instruction.
In addition, our EKC Strategist, Ms. Annie Ng, will be leading a Parent Workshop about our UFLI program on Wednesday, November 19th at 2:30 – 3:20 pm. Yesterday, our PR sent the registration details through email for this workshop if you would like to register.
As always, I love hearing from our families, so if there is any feedback or something you would like to know more about, please do not hesitate to reach out.
I hope that you have a wonderful week ahead!
Sincerely,
Marly Song
Primary Principal
