Science and Math Escape Room
A Thrilling Challenge of Logic and Discovery!
On March 12th and 13th, students at XLIS put their problem-solving skills to the test in the Science & Math Escape Room Challenge!
The Escape Room project is truly an Interdisciplinary Unit (IDU) exhibition, bringing together teachers from various departments to create an immersive and educational experience. This project integrates art, literature, history, math, and science, with teachers collaborating on designing props, creating artworks, exploring historical themes, and developing puzzles that apply real-world mathematical and scientific concepts.
Students also experience interdisciplinary learning firsthand, applying knowledge from multiple subjects to solve challenges within the escape rooms. They must think critically, make connections across disciplines, and work collaboratively to uncover clues and escape.
Additionally, this project provides higher-grade students with a meaningful Service as Action opportunity. They take on leadership roles in designing puzzles, setting up the experience, and engaging younger students, fostering a sense of mentorship and community collaboration. The Escape Room is more than just a game—it’s an exciting and interactive way to showcase MYP learning in action while building problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork skills.
Four Unique Adventures, One Ultimate Challenge
This year’s escape rooms transported students into four thrilling scenarios:
· Ancient Egypt
Teams deciphered hieroglyphs, cracked number puzzles, and uncovered the secrets of a lost civilization.
· Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
Participants used ‘magical’ chemistry reactions and physics principles to cast spells and unlock hidden clues.
· Crime Scene Investigation
Budding detectives analyzed forensic evidence, applied logical reasoning, and worked against the clock to solve a thrilling mystery.
· Bio Lab
Learning Through Play
Beyond the excitement and competitive spirit, the escape rooms encouraged students to think critically, collaborate effectively, and apply scientific and mathematical concepts in a fun, real-world context. The challenges tested not only academic knowledge but also teamwork, creativity, and perseverance.
A Resounding Success!
From the energy in the room to the determination on students’ faces, the event was a resounding success! Some teams raced against the clock and escaped just in time, while others tackled every challenge with impressive problem-solving strategies. The engagement and enthusiasm from students were truly inspiring.
A huge thank you to all the students, teachers, and staff who contributed to making this event a success. We also extend our gratitude to the admin team for capturing the best moments through photos and interviews, preserving the excitement of the event. Additionally, a special thank you to the Resources team for their invaluable support in logistics and setup, ensuring everything ran smoothly!
We can’t wait to bring back more exciting learning adventures next year—will you be ready for the next challenge?
