5. School Introduction
Xi’an Liangjiatan International School (XLIS), formerly known as Xi’an Hi-Tech International School’s International Department (XHISID), was founded in 2003. It is the first IB World School authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization in the northwestern region of China. It is also a non-profit international school established by the Xi’an Municipal Government, and the Hi-Tech Zone Administrative Committee of Xi’an with the objective of serving the Shaanxi Free Trade Zone.
With the world-class international school as the standard, from 2014 to 2018, XLIS has been the first IB world school in Northwestern China, fully authorized to offer all three IB programmes (PYP, MYP, and DP). It is also an authorized and certified SAT test center and a reputable AP examinations center, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC)-accredited member school, an active member of the Association of China and Mongolia International Schools (ACAMIS), as well as the EARCOS. XLIS has consistently considered the broader context of serving the city’s high-quality development as a fundamental objective in its growth. The school remains committed to an educational philosophy that combines a strong foundation in Chinese values and perspectives with a global outlook. The school provides a complete 15-year IB continuum learning journey (PYP including Early Years, MYP, and DP). It implements its curriculum in a global context, All teaching activities are guided by the students’ own developmental needs and interests through differentiated approaches to learning in classrooms with a regulated number of students. There is a maximum of 16 to 18 students in early years’ classes. At most 22 students can be accepted in each PYP, MYP and DP classes. The teacher-student ratio across the school is of 1 teacher to 6 students. The educators at XLIS are expected to respect the differences among students, celebrate their talents, and value the importance of family education. They strive to create an international community that is conductive to the students’ academic, social, physical, and emotional growth. This is achieved through transdisciplinary planning and learning, the understanding and implementation of the school-wide learner outcomes (SLOs), as well as inquiry and concept-based learning.
In addition to the basic learning and assessment of various subjects, our graduation ceremonies, personal projects, the high school theory of knowledge, extended essays, etc, there are numerous relevant opportunities for students to showcase their learning, talents, and growth. Meanwhile, 40 ECA classes are designed to promote the overall academic, social, physical and emotional development of students. Students’ teamwork spirit is cultivated through traditional activities such as International Day, Literacy Week, Summer Fair, Sports Day, Concerts, SDG Forum, etc. The school also strengthens the family-school communication through PTA, Parent Workshops, Parent Interviews, and Open day to bring together more than 1,000 expatriate parents in Shaanxi Province, to promote cultural exchanges, and to strengthen our international education community.
As of now, XLIS’ teaching and learning body is comprised of over 800 individuals hailing from over 52 nations. School’s faculty consists of 120 international education experts representing over 20 countries including China, the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Ireland, Belgium, South Korea and more. The school’s educators possess international teaching qualifications, considerable professional experience and have received previous professional development in the International Baccalaureate system, and more than a quarter of the faculty have worked in our school for at least 5 years. All teachers and admin staff have professional qualifications and relevant work experience, ensuring an exceptional learning and service environment for all students and the community.
