Dear Parents,
I would like to express my sincere gratitude for your active participation in the Parent-Teacher Conference held on January 17th. It was truly valuable to be engaged in individual discussions with the homeroom teachers and subject teachers regarding your child’s academic performance, behavior, and social and mental well-being.
As parents, we are well aware that students’ performance can sometimes exceed our expectations and sometimes fall short. I understand firsthand the mix of surprise and concern that this can bring. It is important to remember that our students are still in the process of growth and development, each on their unique journey. Just as flowers bloom in different areas at different times. Please understand that the outcomes of summative assessments are influenced by the formative assessments that have shaped a student’s educational journey from the early years, rather than being solely determined by the two years of the DP.
As a lifelong learner myself, I would like to share some insights on how you can further support your child at home:
If your child has achieved exceptional results, consider the following points for providing support:
- Acknowledge your child’s achievements and show pride in their hard work.
- Encourage your child to maintain good study habits and effective self-management skills.
- Foster a home environment that encourages curiosity and intellectual growth. Offer access to a variety of books, educational resources, and age-appropriate materials that cater to their interests.
- Encourage your child to explore new topics and engage in independent research. Provide opportunities for them to ask questions, think critically, and engage in intellectual discussions.
- Encourage your child to participate in extracurricular activities that align with their interests and passions.
- Encourage and support your child, be mindful of not placing excessive pressure on them to constantly achieve top grades.
- Ensure that your child’s social and emotional needs are met. Encourage them to maintain healthy relationships, engage in activities that promote emotional well-being, and provide a supportive and nurturing environment at home.
- Regularly communicate with your child’s teachers to stay informed about their progress.
- Be a role model and demonstrate a strong work ethic and a passion for learning. Show your child the value of lifelong learning by engaging in your intellectual pursuits and sharing your experiences.
On the other hand, if you have noticed areas for improvement in your child’s performance, here are some tips to support them:
- Maintain regular and open communication with your child about their academic progress, challenges, and goals. Create a supportive and non-judgmental environment where they feel comfortable discussing their concerns.
- Ensure your child has a balanced lifestyle that includes nutritious food, sufficient rest, physical exercise, and recreational activities.
- Observe how your child best absorbs and retains information, what is the most suitable learning style, and tailor your support accordingly.
- Create a quiet, well-organized, and distraction-free study area at home. Ensure they have access to the necessary resources.
- Help your child establish a consistent routine that includes designated study time, homework completion, and reflection.
- Offer guidance and assistance in setting realistic goals and developing a plan to achieve them.
- Help your child develop effective organizational skills, including keeping track of assignments, and deadlines. Teach them how to prioritize tasks and manage their time effectively.
- Maintain open lines of communication with teachers to address any concerns or challenges.
- Acknowledge and celebrate your child’s achievements, no matter how small. Offer genuine praise and encouragement to boost their confidence and motivation.
