Dear XLIS Community Members,
Education goes far beyond academic achievement. It nurtures sound judgment, empathy, independence, and responsibility that shape students’ lifelong character. As artificial intelligence reshapes learning and daily communication, and as peer relationships become increasingly complex, I would like to share two crucial observations and reminders for our entire school community to support our students’ healthy growth.
1. Guiding Students to Use AI Wisely and Responsibly
AI brings powerful learning tools and creative possibilities to education. However, through recent campus observation, we have noticed a growing concern: few students, especially younger learners, are using AI tools without any parental or school supervision, with completely unrestricted access.
Unregulated AI use poses hidden risks to children’s cognitive development. When students habitually rely on AI to answer every question, finish every assignment, and resolve every confusion, they gradually lose the ability to think independently, reason critically, and persist through challenges. Over-reliance on artificial intelligence creates learning laziness, weakens problem-solving capacity, and may even mislead students with unfiltered, inaccurate information. True learning happens through questioning, trial and error, research, and personal thinking—not through instant artificial answers.
At XLIS, we firmly uphold the principle that AI should support learning, never replace learning. We follow UNESCO and international digital citizenship standards to guide responsible, age-appropriate technology use on campus. We teach students to verify information, protect personal privacy, maintain academic integrity, and preserve their own critical thinking and creativity.
I sincerely invite all parents to join our school’s guidance at home. Please monitor your child’s digital device usage, set clear boundaries for AI tool access, and encourage your children to think first, explore first, and try first before turning to AI support. Together, we help our students embrace technological progress without losing their most precious learning abilities.
2. Building a True Zero-Bullying, Respectful Peer Community
Every student deserves to study and grow in a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment. At XLIS, we have zero tolerance for bullying, verbal harm, exclusion, and any form of unhealthy peer interaction.
In our daily student affairs observation, we have found that many minor conflicts, inappropriate language, and defensive behaviors among students stem from family influence and over-protection. Some children directly imitate adult speech, attitudes, and defensive communication patterns from family life, bringing unnecessary tension into campus interactions. Excessive protection at home often prevents children from learning social adaptability, emotional regulation, and peaceful conflict resolution.
I would like to clearly emphasize our official, safe, and accessible support channels for all students and families. If your child encounters discomfort, unfair treatment, peer conflict, or bullying behavior at school:
1. Students should first bravely report to their Homeroom Teacher (the first and most immediate support person).
2. If the situation requires further attention, parents and students may directly contact the Division Principal for grade-level intervention and follow-up.
3. For any serious concern or community-level issue, families are always welcome to reach out directly to Deputy Head Mr. Brian Lalor or me, Head of School, Lily Liu, for full school-level support and resolution.
Seeking help is courage, not weakness. No student needs to endure unease, fear, or loneliness on campus. Our teachers, counselors, division leaders, and school leadership team stand firmly behind every child.
When such incidents occur, we will strictly abide by local laws and regulations, alongside our school’s restorative practice policy, to deliver lawful and compliant educational disciplinary actions.
Our school conducts standardized safeguarding procedures, including timely reporting, professional intervention, emotional counseling, restorative communication, parent engagement, and long-term behavioral follow-up. We protect vulnerable students while guiding students with inappropriate behaviors to reflect, take responsibility, and rebuild positive social habits.
Education is not only about solving incidents, but about shaping character. We hope every family can work with us to set positive examples in daily communication, guide children to be inclusive, respectful, and adaptable, and avoid excessive protection or extreme verbal guidance that may affect children’s campus social development.
Our goal is to build a pure, warm, and safe XLIS community where every student dares to speak up, feels fully respected, and grows in positive relationships. We sincerely welcome parents to share your thoughts, suggestions, and feedback regarding digital literacy education, AI usage guidance, and student safeguarding work. Every conversation strengthens our community.
Looking ahead to this Wednesday’s Parent-Teacher Conferences, I warmly invite all parents to communicate deeply with teachers, build consistent home-school educational standards, and support every student’s well-being, mentality, and academic growth.
Thank you for your ongoing trust, partnership, and collaboration.
Sincerely,
Lily Liu
