March 2021 Updated Events
01 – Start of ECAs
Tuesday, March 9th
ECAs began on Tuesday March 9th, 2021. Each ECA that we offer is structured to provide experiences designed to enrich the intellectual, social, physical and emotional growth of the students. Opportunities for learning and enrichment are prepared in accordance with students’ grade level and interests in mind. There are 27 ECAs in total for our students this semester.
02 – Regular PTA Core Members Meeting
Friday, March 12th
03 – Friendly-competitive Table Tennis Games with XIS
Thursday, March 18th
On Thursday, March 18 primary and secondary students from the XLIS table tennis ECA traveled to Xi’an International School to play friendly-competitive games against the host’s table tennis team. The secondary students went undefeated, while the primary students experienced both wins and losses. All of the Blue Dragons who participated demonstrated fair play and pride for their school.
04 – Leadership Team of Party Working Committee of Xi’an High-tech Zone Visited XLIS
Friday, March 19th
On the morning of March 19, 2021, Ma Xianping, member of the Party Group and Vice Mayor of Xi’an’s Municipal Government and Secretary of the Party Working Committee of Xi’an High-tech Zone, Wang Hairuo, member of the Party Working Committee and Deputy Director of the Management Committee of Xi’an High-tech Zone, and Rao Xiaohua, Director of the Education Bureau of Xi’an High-tech Zone, visited Xi’an Liangjiatan International School. Dr.Liu Li, XLIS’ Head of School, Primary Principal Brian Lalor, and Head of Logistics Kriss Parker, accompanied their visit.
05 – Campus Visit from Principals of Shanghai YK Pao School and Shanghai Hongrun Boyuan School
Monday, March 22nd
On March 22nd, Mr. Wu Zijian, the principal of Shanghai YK Pao School together with Mr.Chen Wenguo, the principal of Shanghai Hongrun Boyuan were invited to participate in the first Northwestern International School Principals Forum and were invited to XLIS for a short visit. Head of School Dr. Lily Liu accompanied with the school management team welcomed the two principals to our school.
Dr. Liu accompanied our guests around the campus introducing the development of XLIS, our staff and students, as well as our schools’ mission and vision. The principals exchanged views regarding to the development of international education, home and abroad, and expressed their wish to learn and gain more experience from top international schools to better support the future development of local international education.
06 – 2020-2021 Shaanxi Youth Sports Club Swimming League Participation
Monday, March 22nd
On March 22th, XLIS students participated the 2020-2021 Shaanxi Youth Sports Club Swimming League held in Shaanxi Swimming and Diving Hall. 15 students from PYP and 1 student from MYP competed in 100-meter freestyle, 50-meter freestyle, 50-meter backstroke, 100-meter breaststroke and 50-meter breaststroke. Finally, Xu Tengxu won the sixth place in the men’s 200-meter freestyle of group C, while Lv Yirong and Li Zirui were awarded the title of Outstanding Athletes.
Dr. Liu accompanied our guests around the campus introducing the development of XLIS, our staff and students, as well as our schools’ mission and vision. The principals exchanged views regarding to the development of international education, home and abroad, and expressed their wish to learn and gain more experience from top international schools to better support the future development of local international education.
07 – School Fire Drill
Tuesday, March 23th
Tuesday morning 23rd March XLIS practiced a whole school fire drill. Fire drills are an important process for any school as it helps students and staff fully grasp the building’s escape routes and the instructions they must follow from teachers and fire officers. Fire drills help students become accustomed to the schools’ fire drill procedures and recognise that they need to take fire safety seriously, it also helps to remind staff and students of the sound and sight of fire alarms throughout the school, the location of emergency exits and exit routes, fire assembly point, and any specific fire safety procedures students must follow. Fire drills help to reduce confusion, panic, disorderly behaviour, and helps the school note areas of improvement.
08 – XLIS Parent Talk
Thursday, March 25th
In order to realize XLIS parents’ “lifelong learning”, from theory to practice, and to provide a broader exchange platform for parents, XLIS conducted its first “Parent Talk” ! About 90 parents joined this significant event, amongst whom, three parent representatives shared their experiences on parenting and parent-child communication. Also, important discussions ensued around the topic of how to better promote the growth of students’ physical and mental health, from a parent perspective.

09 – Professional Development Event for Subject teachers with Rafael Mendoza

A workshop on Sheltered Instructional Observation Protocols was run for a group of PYP, MYP, DP teachers with world famous consultant Rafael Mendoza.

During the assemblies, students from different year-level actively displayed what they had been learning during their units of inquiry (UOI). They typically focused on a transdisciplinary theme and shared their knowledge pertaining to concepts, ATLs (Approaches to Learning), action, and made connections with the IB Learner Profile attributes.
02 – PYP4 Field Trip
Wednesday, March 10th
On March 10th, all the students of PYP4 had a field trip to Shaanxi Science and Technology Museum to get a deep learning of different forms of energy and what we can do with it.
03 – Lost and Found Fashion Show
Thursday, March 18th
Lost and Found Fashion Show, organized by the Student Council of Primary School, aiming to help students to find their lost properties as well as remind them to have responsibility to belongings of others and themselves through this activity.
Secondary School Events
01 – DP2 Mock Exams
Monday-Thursday, March 1st-5th
In preparation for the IBDP final exams in May, DP2 students sat mock exams over 5 days. Teachers provided feedback and students were supported to fill any gaps in their learning and revise from now to May.
02 – International Women’s Day Celebration
Monday, March 8th
XLIS secondary students celebrated International Women’s Day on Monday, March 8th. This event was held in the afternoon with a luncheon, assembly, and dynasty activities that focused on issues related to women’s rights and gender equality.
03 – Secondary School Parents Coffee Morning
Tuesday, March 9th
On Tuesday, March 9th, Secondary Principal, Daun Yorke, and MYP Assistant Coordinator, Emma Yang, led a workshop for secondary parents about raising teenagers and pre-teens, also known as “tweens” (children who are in-between childhood and the teenage years), They discussed the topic about how to guide teens to use electronic devices (lap-tops, I-pads and mobile phones) properly.
04 – SAT
Saturday, March 13th
XLIS is Northwest China’s first SAT Test Center authorized by the College Board. We organized students to participate in the SAT on 13th March 2021. The follow-up test schedule is as follows: 8th May 2021, 5th June 2021.Students must register well in advance for the SAT exams. 05 – College Essay Workshop for DP Students
March 1st- March 31
College Essay Workshop, which plays an important role in college admission, was successfully organized four times in March at XLIS, targeting to improve DP1 students’ essay writing skills.
06 – Online College Enrollment Lectures
Wednesday, March 17th, 11:00 GMT / 19:00 HKT
Career Showcase: Medicine
In this showcase we discussed Medical degrees. Experts from University of Dundee and St George’s University gave us a speech about what it would be like to study medicine, and how your students could apply.
07 – Inspire Citizen Student Leadership: TED Talks and Debate for Impact
Friday, March 12th
Students council members were trained in debating skills (high school) and TED Talk speaking skills (middle school).
08 – Gaoxin No.1 Middle School Visited XLIS
Thursday, March 25th
On March 25th visited by 16 students and teachers from Gaoxin No.1 Middle School, XLIS held the first communication seminar in Black Box. This event offered opportunities to build connections for students from the two schools and to learn from each other through communication and collaboration. In the event, XLIS students shared the SDGs project, led Root Cause Tree activity and GXMS students led a debate session. We look forward to having more cooperation and exchanging with top local schools in the future.
09 – DP2 Final Visual Arts Exhibition
Monday, March 29th- Thursday, April 1st
The exhibition titled Come Find Us,took place at multiple locations around XLIS, displaying 33 art works curated by DP2 students created in the last two years. Parents were warmly welcomed. The exhibition lasted for 4 days till April 1st and was a very unique art experience for the viewers. Read more: http://comefindus.cn/
10 – DP Sex Education
Wednesday, March 31th
Mr. McGarry and Ms. Beena ran a two-hour session on sex education for our DP1 and DP2 students.
