On September 15th, the US-China Elite University Admission Guidance Conference was held at XLIS. Dr. Tian Mei, Vice Dean of the School of International Education, Xi’an Jiaotong University, and Mr. Shawn Felton, the former Executive Director of Undergraduate Admissions at Cornell University, delivered admission guidance to over 300 students and parents from XLIS and Xi’an Gaoxin No.7 Middle School, focusing on the pathway to academic excellence and the application processes for top universities in both China and the United States.
The conference consisted of two sessions: keynote speeches and round-table discussions. Firstly, Dr. Tian Mei delivered a speech titled “Pathway to Academic Excellence: The Guide for International Students Applying to Xi’an Jiaotong University.” Focusing on the school’s history, a case of EE, life at XJTU, and how to join XJTU. She introduced the advantages and value of studying at XJTU for international students.
Then, Mr. Shawn Felton delivered a wonderful sharing on “How to Apply to Ivy League and Highly Selective Universities in the US”, which included five aspects: the application process and requirements, the importance of academic performance and standardized tests, extracurricular activities and leadership development, essay writing and interview skills, and information on scholarships and financial aid. He explained what kind of international talent we need to cultivate in the new era and what international high school students should focus on when applying to top global universities, offering clear direction and more possibilities for international high school students.
During the round-table discussion, these two esteemed guest speakers, together with student and teacher representatives from XLIS and Xi’an Gaoxin No.7 Middle School, discussed topics such as “the impact of extracurricular involvement in shaping the admissions decisions,” “the key factors that differentiate a compelling application from a less competitive one,” and “how to make one’s statement stand out?” Dr. Tian and Mr. Shawn offered practical and effective suggestions accordingly, based on the changes in the global situation in the past five years. Included in this is the undergraduate and graduate enrollment data of famous Chinese and American universities which benefited the teachers, students and parents greatly.
